Form I-9
Employment eligibility verification form.
Form I-9 is a federal document that verifies an employee's identity and authorization to work in the United States. Employers must complete Section 2 within three business days of the employee's first day of work by examining acceptable documents (passport, driver's license plus Social Security card, etc.). I-9 forms must be retained for three years after hire or one year after termination, whichever is later.
Example
On a new hire's first day, the employee completes Section 1 of the I-9 and presents a US passport, which the employer examines and records in Section 2 before the third business day.
Why It Matters for Your Business
I-9 violations carry fines from $252 to $2,507 per form for paperwork errors and much higher penalties for knowingly employing unauthorized workers.
