Legal billing has unique requirements that generic invoice templates cannot handle—trust account management, multiple timekeeper rates, 6-minute billing increments, and LEDES format compliance for institutional clients. This template addresses all of these while maintaining a clean, professional layout that reflects well on your practice.

The trust account ledger is critical for ethics compliance. It tracks deposits into the client trust, withdrawals for fees and expenses, and the current balance. This ensures you never overbill against the trust and provides a clear record for client review and bar association audits.

How to Use This Template

1

Set Up Timekeeper Rates

Enter each attorney and paralegal with their hourly rate in the rate table. The template applies the correct rate when you log time entries.

2

Log Billable Time and Expenses

Record each time entry with the date, timekeeper, task description, and time spent in 6-minute increments. Add case expenses separately.

3

Reconcile Trust Account

If billing against a client trust, the template deducts fees from the trust balance and shows the remaining funds. Export and send to the client.

Frequently Asked Questions

What billing increments do law firms use?

Most law firms bill in 6-minute increments (one-tenth of an hour). This template uses 0.1-hour increments by default. For example, a 15-minute phone call would be billed as 0.3 hours. Some firms bill in quarter-hour (0.25) increments.

What is LEDES billing format and do I need it?

LEDES (Legal Electronic Data Exchange Standard) is a standardized billing format required by many corporate and insurance clients. If your clients are large companies or insurers, they likely require LEDES. This template can export in LEDES-compatible format.
