Migration Guide
Wave served its purpose as a free accounting tool, but "free" often comes at the cost of your time. Without AI automation, every transaction in Wave needs manual attention. Without cash flow forecasting, you're guessing about your financial future. Upgrading to FiscalInsights means upgrading from manual bookkeeping to intelligent automation while keeping all your historical data intact.
The migration from Wave is particularly smooth because Wave's simplified account structure maps directly to FiscalInsights categories. There's no complex chart of accounts to untangle or advanced features to recreate. Most Wave users find the FiscalInsights interface familiar but noticeably more capable, with AI suggestions appearing alongside each transaction and a real-time dashboard showing financial health at a glance.
If cost was the reason you chose Wave, consider that FiscalInsights also offers a free Starter plan for basic needs. But even the paid Pro plan at $29/month pays for itself in time savings—the average Wave user who switches reports saving 6-8 hours per month on bookkeeping tasks. That's hours you can spend earning revenue instead of categorizing receipts.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Export Wave data
In Wave, go to Accounting > Transactions and use the Export button to download all transactions as CSV. Also export your customer and vendor lists from Sales > Customers and Purchases > Vendors. Download any invoices you want to keep as PDFs for your records.
Create your FiscalInsights account at fiscalinsights.com. Start with the free Starter plan or begin a 14-day trial of Pro or Team. Select "Migrating from Wave" during onboarding to activate the Wave-specific import wizard.
Import transactions
Upload your Wave transaction CSV in the Migration Center. The importer maps Wave's income and expense categories to FiscalInsights equivalents. Since Wave uses a simplified account structure, most categories map directly. Review the mapping and adjust any categories you want reorganized.
Connect accounts
Link your bank accounts and credit cards via Settings > Bank Connections. This is the biggest upgrade from Wave—going forward, all transactions import automatically instead of relying on Wave's sometimes unreliable bank connections.
Start using
Begin using FiscalInsights for your daily accounting. The AI immediately starts categorizing new transactions, and within a week of corrections and confirmations, it will handle 90%+ of categorization automatically. Explore cash flow forecasting and the reporting dashboard—features you didn't have in Wave.
