Migration Guide

FreeAgent is well-designed for UK freelancers and small businesses, with solid HMRC integration and Making Tax Digital compliance. However, for US-based businesses, FreeAgent's UK-centric design creates friction: US bank feed coverage is limited, tax categories don't align with IRS requirements, and there's no support for US-specific needs like 1099 preparation or quarterly estimated tax payments.

Migrating to FiscalInsights gives US-based businesses an accounting platform built for their tax environment. Built-in Schedule C categorization, quarterly tax estimation, 1099 vendor tracking, and IRS-compliant reporting are all included. Bank feed coverage is excellent across US institutions including major banks, credit unions, and startup-friendly banks like Mercury, Relay, and Novo.

The migration process accounts for the UK-to-US transition, remapping FreeAgent's UK categories to US equivalents. If you maintain any UK-based financial activity, FiscalInsights' multi-currency support handles the conversion. For US businesses that chose FreeAgent for its simplicity and are now struggling with its UK focus, FiscalInsights provides a purpose-built alternative.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Export FreeAgent

In FreeAgent, go to Settings > Data Export and download your complete accounting data. This includes your chart of accounts, bank transactions, contacts, and invoice history. FreeAgent exports in CSV format compatible with FiscalInsights' import tool.

2

Create account

Sign up at fiscalinsights.com. During onboarding, select "Migrating from FreeAgent." Since FreeAgent is UK-focused and FiscalInsights is US-focused, the migration wizard helps you remap any UK-specific tax categories to US equivalents.

3

Import

Upload your FreeAgent export files in the Migration Center. The importer handles the translation from FreeAgent's UK accounting terminology to US GAAP categories. Review the category mapping carefully, especially for tax-related accounts.

4

Connect US banks

Set up bank feeds with your US financial institutions. FiscalInsights has broader US bank support than FreeAgent, including connections to startup banks like Mercury and Relay. If FreeAgent's bank feed coverage was a pain point, this step is a significant improvement.

5

Verify

Compare opening balances and run a P&L to verify accuracy. Pay attention to any currency conversion if you had GBP-denominated transactions in FreeAgent. Once verified, you're fully migrated and can close your FreeAgent account.
